Quarter 1
Fiction Reflection
Before this assignment, all I knew was that you could search “fiction” in the search bar and look for fiction books. Throughout this assignment, I became better and better at effective searching, making it easier and more efficient to search for content that I needed. As far as ebooks and audiobooks go, I was clueless to the abundance and diversity of our catalogs selection. This assignment showed me that there were ebooks and audio books for both of my collections. As a media assistant I can utilize this knowledge of ebook and audiobook resources to help students at dsa by suggesting these options to students that can’t find hard copies of books, or who simply do not like to read. A helpful resource that I used throughout this assignment was NoveList Plus. This website allows you to search for books' read alikes, even further increasing a student’s interest in literature. I had to find many read alikes for The Hunger Games, and this website gave me more than I needed, all of them accurate to the title of “read alikes”. Overall, my knowledge of library technology increased exponentially throughout this assignment. From making my searches more specific to learning how to resize images, I’m confident that I would be more helpful to students at DSA than before. |
Nonfiction Reflection
Before creating my nonfiction collection, all I knew was that you could search NCWiseOwl for books that you were interested in. I had never used any of the other databases before. Now, I know of the many other databases in NCWiseOwl that are helpful, and that I can search the whole website, (all of its databases), for something. In addition to learning more about NCWiseOwl, I learned more about a database called SIRS. I had never heard of SIRS before this assignment. Now I know that it is a useful database to search for books, articles, and other things that a student might need. As far as relevancy in my sources, I used the CRAAP test. I learned about the CRAAP test in middle school, and it had been brought up many times by certain teachers each year, so I was pretty familiar with this test. Throughout this assignment, I got better at working through certain databases, and editing my collections to better fit the criteria of the assignment. Searching databases for students that need help finding resources will help me be a better assistant. |
Quarter 2
This book trailer project allowed me to increase my knowledge of project resources, as well as understand why literature is important in encouraging diversity. Before this project, I knew that google slides was a good way to make presentations for class. That is all I had ever used google slides for. Now I know that google slides can be used for a lot more. SInce I am interested in film, I can use google slides to make trailers, with cool transitions. Not only did I learn more about google slides, but I learned more about screencastify, an extension on my laptop that I can use to record my screen. Before this project, all I knew was that my teachers used it a lot to record videos for us to learn content asynchronously. Now that I know how to use it, I'm able to create creative videos with my chromebook. I used screencastify after this project in my history class, and it was easy because I already knew how to use it. I learned and improved on starting my videos, and editing them after I have finished recording.
I also learned that literature serves as a gateway for tolerance and education on diversity. Books allow for people to deeply understand people that are very different from them. In order for people to tolerate difference, they need to somewhat understand and have a sense of empathy for the differences. That's why books as windows and doors are important. More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera is a perfect example of a window book. It helps heterosexual people grasp the struggle of being gay, which leads to tolerence and kindness for people that are different from them.

Quarter 3
I have furthered my skills with using google slides to make a continuous project that sends a message to the audience. I can more easily utilize photos, and I know how to access more of the tools to change my formats and themes of my slides, which enhances the project as a whole. If I were to do this again in the future, I would improve my presentation by adding more into my presentation on how to actually protect your first amendment rights. I go into detail about how important they are and what bad things would happen if we didn’t have these rights, but I don’t go into depth as much explaining how to protect them.
My big takeaway from the checkology modules is that the First Amendment is the backbone of democracy. Without free speech, freedom to assemble, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and the freedom of petition, the United States wouldn’t be the same. I also learned that you have to take any information you find with a grain of salt until you further research and verify that information. False information can be dangerous to society. The knowledge from the checkology modules will make me be more careful with the information that I come into contact with, especially on social media. I will think twice before sharing possibly false information with my friends. This knowledge will also help me find a more reliable and credible source academically. Personally, it can help me navigate through all the false information on the internet. It will help me become a more educated person.
